Job Description



Norfolk Department of Public Health is seeking a Public Health Nurse (PHN) for clinical services. This Public Health Nurse will provide direct patient care in sexually transmitted infections (STI), family planning, childhood and adult immunizations, and pregnancy testing clinics. The nurse will provide individualized education, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infection and risk reduction. In addition, the nurse will provide education regarding reproductive health, family planning and immunizations. The programs serviced by this nurse are aimed at prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, reducing morbidity and mortality associated with vaccine preventable disease, and unintentional pregnancies. This nurse is expected to provide nursing coverage for evening STI clinic which is offered twice a month. This Public Health Nurse will also serve as a team member during emergencies for the health department, city or state.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience providing education and counseling to individuals and groups; unrestricted registered nurse license in the state of Virginia; ability to work effectively with others and to work independently; communicate effectively orally and in writing; competent computer skills; phlebotomy skill/ specimen collection and handling, ability to track, process and analyze data; able to provide services in the community as well as in the clinical setting. Nursing experience in one or more of the following areas to include sexually transmitted Infection, women’s Health, immunization, and/or Pubic Health is a necessity

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer BSN or equivalent training and experience; public health practice or community experience is an added plus. Experience in sexually transmitted infection, family planning/reproductive health, childhood and adult immunizations, maternal health, and community education is a plus. Bilingual English/ Spanish skills are a plus.
